Movie review of "midnight's chidren"

  • On 9th September 2018, we had film screening of the two films first was "Midnight's Children"(Novel written by Salman Rushdie) directed by Deepa Mehta and second was "The Reluctant Fundamentalist"(A Novel written by Mohsin Hamid) directed by Mira Nair. So, our task is  to give review of these films with the perspectives of The Postcolonial Studies, so I will try to connect films with postcolonial approaches.

Midnight's Children:-

The movie “midnight’s Children is based on the Famous novel by Salman Rushdie. The film is directed by Deepa Mehta and Screen play by Salman RushdieIn this movie we can find historical facts, magic realism and religion conflict.

  • The title of this movie is appropriate according to the story of this movie. Title is that "midnights children", . we can see crises between Shiva and Saleem, Shiva is Hindu and Saleem is Muslim both were born at the stroke of midnight of 14th August 1947 In the movie  later on they know that Saleem is Hindu and Shiva is Muslim. These two children have super power of communication through their thought.

Changez leading main role in this movie. This movie reflects relationship between Pakistan and America. The story is about the young man changez Khan who attracted to American business culture. He was an intellectual and respected person in American wall street business company. There are two meanings of fundamentals have been used, first in business and another is in terrorism.

This movie is about a one man changez Khan, a Pakistani man who goes to America for job and to make his good future. He easily mixed up with the environment and people of America. Everything was well going but his life changez after the attack of 9/11/ on America. American people staring to doubt on him because he comes from Pakistan. He becomes symbol of terror for Americans. He faces many adversity and finally he commit professional suicide and came back to Pakistan.

Because after all we all are human beings and our blood is same but we make this type of various religions. But if people are fighting with each other because of those religions so what are the use of those religions. So I want to say that this movie is very interesting. And technique of telling story is outstanding. At the end of movie Saleem said that Marry is mother who is Christian,Adam is my son of Shiva and Parvati and he is Muslim.

Hybridity

Mixing of   - Saleem is the perfect example of hybrid man, who was the son of colonizer and poor Indian lady and also the other character, Shiva was another example of hybrid man who was the son of Muslim parents.

Freedom struggle

Film includes the war of 1965 in Karachi, civil war in Bangladesh. In India 'The Emergency' from 1975 to 1977 when Prime minister Indira Gandhi had a state of emergency declared accross the country.

Magic Realism

Character of parvati presents Magic Realism. Though her magic skills. She changes the situation and saves Saleem's life. Abracadabra, which is signifies her believe in magic or we can say superstition, through she saves saleem's life. The movie juxtaposes on both sides at one side India dealing with technology and also involves in superstition.
