Orientalism : Edward said

Edward was die Said was born on 1^st November, 1935 and died on 5^th September, 2003. He was Palestinian American literary theorist. He contributed in the field of literary theory named Post colonialism. He is famous for his work named “Orientalism”. As a cultural critic, he sees the cultural representation in the things. He sees West’s condescending perception in their depiction of Middle East, Asian and North African people, their society and their culture. As a public intellectual, Said discussed culture, literature, music and contemporary politics.

• orientalism’ is the term used to show Western approach and attitude towards Middle , North African and Asian people, society and culture. Western people see them as unintelligent, undeveloped, uncivilized and lower than themselves.  
• So, in this way they think themselves superior than the Eastern people. This is the simple meaning of the term ‘orientalism’. 
• As this term suggests, ‘orient’ that is east and on the contrary there is ‘occident’ means west.
• After the coming of the book “Orientalism” by Said, in 1978, this term started getting place in the field of research and education. 

• Here is my responses to Identify some concept related Orientalism from the interview of Edwards Said.

1. "Orientalism" revolutionized the study of the Middle East and helped to create and shape entire new fields of study such as Post-Colonial theory as well influencing disciplines as diverse as English, History, Anthropology, Political Science and Cultural Studies.Edward Said's contribution is to how we understand this general process of what we could call stereotyping has been immense.

2.   Orientalism operates is a threating and demonized figure of the Islamic Terrorist that is emphasized by jounlists and Hollywood. Said argue that there is lot more going on there that is misunderstood  or not seen by the peoples of the west.

 4.Islam is a useful foreign demon to turn attention away from the inequities and problems in our society. As a result the human side of the Islamic and especially Arabic world, are rarely to be found and the net result is this vacancy on the one hand and these easy, almost automatic image of terror and violence.

 5. Orientalism traise to explain that how we understand people,strangers, who look different to us by virtue of the color of their skin.
