Online Discussion :- Oneness Of Literature

Thinking Activity :- oneness of literature

The literature is concerned with three major themes Life,  Love and Death.Universe literature from antique to present time has the same pattern to express Human emotions , feelings. The literature is connected with each other. and we can say that ,the literature is produced from the literature.

Northrop Frye :-

His article of Archetypal criticism that shows full literature have oneness of it's entity and all share commonly.
'The West Land' by T.S.Eliot and Anton Chekhov's short story 'A Joke' we also find oneness of literature.
T.S Eliot :-
His work Tradition and individual talent, it's reflected to maximum influence of writer's past and experiences.
He said that no poets, artist of any art and has complete meaning alone, his appreciation is the application of his relationship with dead poets.

'A Joke' by Anton Chekhov :-

Another things comes in our mind is that love also seems missing because they both not marries to each other. So we can say that it is the lust which was the reason they were connected.
Thus, the theme of sexual perversion remains the same which shows the uniformity in literature.
If we see the translation of the story is not changed much. Some of the words are not translated.

Sexual perversion :-

In the poem we find that sexual perversion as subject. This theme shows lustful desire and decoy. But Chekhov's short story have not found any kind of lust desire and attraction of man. At the end of story she married with other man still love her. This situation describe the reality of human relationship and selfless love.
So this type of encounter we find in both literary type and shows oneness in it.

Thinking Activity :To the Lighthouse

Image result for to the lighthouse

(1) How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said.

Virginia Woolf use the modernism in her novel To The Lighthouse. Those expressed her all the characters very well. She also use some autobiographical Fundamental here. She use stream of consciousness.
She present here sentenence of human relationship between Mrs. And Mr. Ramsay. Lily Briscoe a female artist struggle a lot . In her era people think that women can not write or paint. She also face the struggle together Mrs . Ramsay and Charles Tansley . Through this Woolf presented the situation of women  in that era. She wrote her all work very critical way. She made scoff on her character and doing critical thinking which that times man can not do. She also present patriarchy and gender separation here.

2)  Do you agree: "The novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay"? Can we read Mrs. R in context of the idea of Ideal Indian Woman - ( Karyeshu dasi, Karaneshu manthri; Bhojeshu mata, Shayaneshu rambha; Kshamayeshu dharithri, Roopeshu lakshmi; Satkarma yukta, Kuladharma pathni. )

We can say that the novel is a rate and critique of Mrs. Ramsay, because from the very beginning of the novel we can remark her character that she is very caring and type  hearted housewife and mother but when we see Mrs Ramsay with the perspective of Lily Brisco we can say that her good behaviour is not natural. She has considered as an aim woman because she fits in frame of patriarchal mindset. In the painting of Lily we can see that Mrs Ramsay is at the centre of the painting and summer house but she is knitting and guiding her child  Mrs Ramsay's character goes downward from controlling position to a mere housewife.
Yes we can read Mrs. R in context of the idea of Ideal Indian Woman as she follows all the rules of wife which has designed by patriarchy.

3) Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator (Virginia Woolf herself who is categorically represented by Lily)? (Key: Take help from the presentation on Symbolism to connect Mrs. Caroline Ramsay with Lighthouse. Secondly, the narrator / author cannot fully disappear from the novel and thus the stoicism of Lily to paint and thus prove that she can paint, is symbolically presented in stoicism of Lighthouse. Read 'lighthouse' symbol from presentation slide with this insight to connect lighthouse with the narrator. Give your concluding remarks in the comment below in this blog )

Lighthouse is a symbol for bestowal light to everybody, guide to everybody who is lost. In the novel Mrs. Ramsay play role like lighthouse. She takes care of husband, tells stories every afternoon to James that he grew well and that’s why James loves mother and hates father. She also information Lily to Marry. She also takes care of other who comes there. It is she who was spirit of house and that why every one miss her after her death. So lighthouse symbolically suggests Mrs. Ramsay.

4) In the article by Joseph Blotner, two myths are patterned together. Name the myths?

How they are zeroed down to the symbols of 'Window' and 'Lighthouse'?

How does the male phallic symbol represent feminine Mrs. Ramsay?

In literature there is always myth aferwards the story /novel. In The Lighthouse also has myth behind it.

There were two myths Oedipus myth and Pagan myth. As window works as bring new air in our house. We can interpret it as window brings freshness in our mind. Lighthouse shows the way to the people and it helps to take the right decision. So as compare to society it stands positive thing. 'To The Lighthouse' is based on Greek myth. In this novel  Virginia Woolf use various myth. Joseph blotner has also use the famous myth like the pagan myth or Oedipus myth. The myth of kronos and Rhea is relation between father and mother. Kronos has eating children. But they are so innocent. Here, Rhea is represented as a mother.  The myth of Homeric Hymns it is the praise of divinity or God. In this reference we find that how metaphor became reality. Use in the Homeric Hymns metaphor is  more important, literature is full of metaphor.

5) What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman'? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel?

The novel Lighthouse is also like Kunstlerroman . Character of Lily was an artist. She always facing problem as an artist in the novel.Mrs. Ramsay and Charles Tansley doesn't like to watch her as a artist. But she do it still the end of the novel. She complete her painting of mrs. Ramsay.Woolf also symbolized her character with this.

6 ) Lily' Dilemma in the novel  " To the Lighthouse ."

As we all knows that Lily's character represents the biographical image. She always talk about the independent life. According to her there is no need of man.  In short Lily's thoughts remains totally vice versa from the thoughts of  Mrs. Ramsay. But at the end she constantly thinks about Mrs. Ramsay. In a way she also wants to be like her. Because she realizes that Mrs. Ramsay remains in everyone's heart even after her death.

7 ) You have compared the 'beginning' and the 'ending' of the novel and the film adaptation of the novel directed by Colin Gregg. Do you think that the novel is more poignant than the movie? If yes, do you ascribe the fact that the power of words is much greater than that of the screen / visuals?

The novel is more poignant than the movie.  Both words and screen have its own advantages but words are more powerful than the screen. In reading novel one has chance to imagine the things with various aspects with various colours but it is not possible in the screening the movie. Screening movie is restricted the power of imaginations. Novel has poetic charm which movie can't provide to readers or audiences. And  movie is always directed as director wants, not as writer actually described in novel. No doubt screening movie also help us to clarify the ideas and some confusion but it harms readers pictorial quality. In imagination one has so many things at same time and screening movie has only one. In ' To the Lighthouse ' as we read some line in class like.... “Had there been an axe handy, a poker, or any weapon that would have gashed a hole in his father’s breast and killed him, there and then, James would have seized it.” -  it describes  the strength of words which we can't find in movie.

8 ) Ho do you interpret the last line of the novel ?

In the end of the novel she feels fatigue. But she is now happy too. She thinks that she has now got the artistic vision. Which she was wanted. We can interpret that she considers herself as a winner against the Mrs. Ramsay and Charles Transley. How independent life gives her good vision.

But in the movie after completing the painting she goes upstairs and and consider herself as a fool. She was thinking that without this family life, she can live the life easily. But now it becomes difficult for her to live alone. And she starts thinking to be like Mrs. Ramsay.

9) What does the catalogue named as 'Army and Navy' signify? What does cutting of 'Refrigerator'  signify?

Army and Navy’ and Refrigerator are connected with preserve or shaper of culture. The catalogue I n To the Lighthouse does not have a date, but it does have a name. War and consumption are linked in the same object. Why Virginia Woolf put here reference of refrigerator and why James cut only refrigerator?  So here Mrs.Ramsay is training and shaping her children’s mind. Here instrument of science and occupied of same sphere as technology and war in linked that science and tech. has this war effect of novel.  At that time both are symbol and refer in this novel each and every of scene of novel.

10) Why did Virginia give such prominence to the tale of the “Fisherman’s Wife”?

The tale of "Fisherman’s Wife is related the character of Mrs. Ramsay as well as Mr. Ramsay, because Woolf is subverting the philogynt of fairytale for example the male characters are behaviorlike fisherman's wife, they have wishes which are not fulfilled in a way they wants and that unsatisfied desires leads them towards failure. Mrs Ramsay is more successful in her work than Mr. Ramsay and Lily Brisco is better in her profession than Charles Tansley.

11) How is India represented in 'To The Lighthouse'?

The First time it represent the patriarchal lecture through the character of Mrs. Ramsay- As a ideal lady.

So many times  we hear about the prosperity of the India. So most of the time India portrayed as a land of pearls.

We can say that  interpret  Augustus Carmichael refers India as a land of peace. We can connect this thing with the T. S. Eliot' s  The Waste Land too.

The Wasteland by T.S Eliot: Thinking activity

( 1) What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land' ? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzche's views? or has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling ,mytho- historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

T.S.Eliot and Friedrich Nietzsche are quit different in their thinking. Because Nietzsche never believe that “power” which is given by God and because of that power of the god whole world is generated. He is very practical in his life. He always believe on that whatever is seen by his eyes. He is believed in”superhuman” because he knows that what types of problems and struggle we have to face as a human being and after that they became as a superhuman. Above all we can say that he is believed in present life. He say that never think about past or future because with that we can never touch to the success. His power of positive thinking is appreciate to those who is fail in life. With that spirit we can do whatever we want. It develops our self faith. While T.S.Eliot is believe in spirituality and religion. we can’t say that he is always live in past he is very much in present also. He uses many types of references of different myth’s and religions etc. In short we can say that they both are power in their place because they balanced very well between progress and regress.

 (2) Gustaf Hellstrom's remark in the following image :-

What are your views regarding these comments? Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy nad satisfied life? Or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition'?

Frued and Nietzsche both are the contemporaries but their surface and field of way is different. Frued is believed in individuality and talk about "primitive instinct" where as Eliot believed in preservation of cultural traditions which means all together.
Frued was wrote that for progress of any individual primitive instinct was needed but in order to preserve tradition Eliot says that their is need for to grew together, for that example of Buddha was perhaps appropriate.

 (3)  Allusion to the Indian thoughts in 'The Wasteland'

In "The Waste Land" we see that Indian culture, religion, vedic hymns. example Upanishads and Buddhism idea are ancient and also Indian culture. In this poem we found context of river Ganga,Upanishads, Prajapati and 'what thunder said'. In thunder are three type of Da's.

Three Da's

   (1) Datta
   (2) Damyata
   (3) Dayadhvam

DATA :- Data means be a giver to others

DAYADHVAM :-  D ayadhvam means feeling, empathy, pity  other, put your self into the grief and suffering.    .

DAMYATA :-  Damyata means self direction.Above one's passion and avidity.

He ends his poem by lines "Shantih...Shantih...Shantih"   which mean peace that passes understanding. so this concept we can understand he use Indian concept in his poem.
